Cathedral Catholic Announces New Head Boys Soccer Coach

Cathedral Catholic is pleased to announce the appointment of a new boys head soccer coach: Aaron Martinez. Coach Martinez brings over a decade of high-level coaching experience across high school and collegiate athletics. He most recently served as an Assistant Coach for the Boys Varsity Soccer program at Cathedral Catholic and is also a full-time Religion teacher on campus. His wife, Amy, is a proud Cathedral Catholic alumna and current faculty member, making the Dons community a true home for their growing family.

A San Diego native, Coach Martinez was a standout high school athlete at St. Augustine High School; as starting goalkeeper, he earned First-Team All-CIF honors, won a CIF title and the program’s first Southern California Regional title. His team was recently inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame, recognizing their historic success. As a club soccer player, his teams captured the Presidio League Premier title, National Cup and Regional Cup, rounding out an elite youth playing career. He went on to play collegiate athletics at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida.

His coaching résumé includes impactful tenures at multiple San Diego high schools. At Kearny High School, he led the team to the first and only CIF Championship in school history and a CIF Southern California Regional Semifinal appearance. At El Capitan High School, he guided the program to its first 10-win season and CIF Semifinal berth. He was also part of the coaching staff at St. Augustine High School during the team’s run to the CIF SoCal Division 2 Championship in 2021.

Coach Martinez also served as the Head Men’s and Women’s Golf Coach at Holy Cross College in Indiana, where he led nationally competitive rosters, oversaw major athletic operations and played a key role in recruiting, fundraising and program development at the collegiate level.

Coach Martinez brings a proven track record of building programs, forming student-athletes of strong character and competing at the highest levels of high school athletics.
