☀️Dons’ Summer Highlights☀️ Over the summer, Evan Wachowiak '24 had the opportunity to participate in a research project at UCSD's Political Science Department. Evan worked closely with Dr. Philip Roeder, a Professor of Political Science, on this project and paper focused on Russia and the war in Ukraine. He felt prepared for this work due to the writing skills he has acquired in English classes and the background knowledge he has learned in his history classes at Cathedral Catholic. Evan plans on studying international relations in order to work for the State Department and shares that this opportunity was a helpful step toward his future career:
"I completed a research project/paper with UCSD Political Science Professor Philip Roeder's guidance and assistance. The project focused on the nature of Russian political leaders' statements on nationalism and, therefore, the current war in Ukraine. The study illustrated how ideology is utilized towards the Russian populace as well as how the leaders' statements illustrate the future length of the war.
CCHS has done a lot in the background to prepare me for this project. More specifically, the English classes that I have taken in the previous years have assisted my writing within the project and the level of writing that is needed for a project of this magnitude. Moreover, the history classes (especially AP World History) have aided in my background understanding of the cultural and political situation in Russia (notwithstanding further research I conducted).
After graduating from CCHS, I plan on studying international relations and hope to work within the foreign service, which is a part of the State Department. This project has aided my understanding of the reasoning that may be needed within the foreign service as well as the background knowledge needed for the job."
At Cathedral Catholic, Evan is involved in several clubs and honor societies, including Mock Trial (for which he served as an expert witness last year), the Rho Khappa History Honor Society and the JCL Latin Honors Society, of which he is the Vice President. He is also heavily involved in the music program and plays for Masses and participates in other events throughout the school year.
